Bei Postfix:

smtpd_sasl_type=dovecot
smtpd_sasl_path=private/auth
smtpd_sasl_auth_enable=yes

und in der dovecot.conf ganz unten in der auth-Sektion:

      socket listen {
        client {
          path = /var/spool/postfix/private/auth
          mode = 0660
          # Assuming the default Postfix user and group
          user = postfix
          group = postfix
        }


Jedes weitere Experiment mit PAM & Co ist IMHO absolut überflüssige 
Zeitverschwendung wenn es nur zwei Handgriffe bedarf um 1:1 das 
funktionierende Dovecot-Setup zu nutzen.

Ergo: So machen und nicht anders.
