Danke! das bringt Licht ins Dunkel.
Wenn ich es richtig sehe, kann ich da aber wenig beeinflussen, da doch 
sicher der MAU verantwortlich ist, das subject aus 'encoded-word's und 
text zusammenzubauen, oder?

Die verwendete rubyklasse kommt damit wohl nicht klar, schade :-(
