Vielleicht hat deine Installation ja den Namen verbogen. Was sagt
"postconf smtpd_sasl_path"?

Zwei Möglichkeiten:
- schalte mit -v (oder sogar -vv) den smtpd in master.cf auf verbose und
suche nach, wo dann smtpd.conf gesucht wird.
- Lese die Doku zu deiner Version und suche nach, was dort zu smtpd.conf
bzw. smtpd_sasl_path erwähnt wird.

Ich kann mir noch vorstellen, dass du chroot aktiv hast und die Datei ins
chroot kopieren musst.
